Teaching Philosophy

I design my courses with a certain type of mindset. Encouraging students to take risks using real world scenarios. Whether working freelance or in a corporation, you need to follow rules. As well as following requirements of the project, working with team, and dealing with critical feedback. In today’s competitive job market, being an expert in graphic design isn’t enough. You need a working knowledge in designing web pages, create videos and audio compositions. With my professional experience in web design, video production, photography, and audio composition; I create projects that match current trends in today’s market.

To accomplish that, I stay up on the most current technologies and standards. I use the knowledge to draw upon in teaching my courses. Whether my involvement in various professional organizations such Chicago Interactive Design & Development (CIDD) Group, Chicago Graphic Design Meetup Group, Chicago Web Designers/ Web Developers Group, and National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP). As well I subscribe to various online publications such as Photoshop User Magazine, Codrops, and Smashing Magazine.

Every student has a skill set in which they excel. It’s important for me to discover what that is and encourage to the student to follow the specific path. From experience, if the student knows that they are good at something, and someone else recognizes this, they will want to improve on their weaknesses. The more honest I’m with feedback regarding the students’ skill level, the better progress they will show in future projects. By giving a student options, they learn to develop a decision-making knowledge and are accountable for their work. This allows them to weigh their decisions by reviewing project guidelines.

While it doesn’t happen with every class decision, but I do think it’s important to get input from the students on what they want to learn. It helps to hear their perspective, within reason, when making these decisions. They might not always get what they want, but I do think it’s important to listen to their side. Involving students in their education has provided opportunities to further learning for the whole class.
